The new Girls album Father, Son, Holy Ghost must be good - I’ve been listening whilst working for the first time in two months (I find writing hard without the daily deadlines of term time) and not once have I switched to iTunes to see what the fuck has come on and skip track - which is a common experience when listening to new music. Or, at least, I usually can’t just get on and ignore the music, I have to sit and actively listen. And then get bored. But no, I’m listening without really noticing, occasionally stopping and thinking, “this is good”.

New video for Garden. Spread it xx

My harddrive ran out of space, so I’m currently in the process of identifying what can go onto external drives. During this process I found out which artists occupy the most space on my harddrive - here’s the top ten:

1. The Beatles (obviously)

2. Green Day (guilty)

3. Blackbird Blackbird

4. Fleetwood Mac

5. Pretty Lights

6. Girl Talk

7. Radiohead

8. Kanye West

9. Delphic (only because the iTunes version of the album came with about 6 music videos)

10. Coldplay

What’s of note here is the fact that the artists at 3, 5 and 6 are only there because I’ve got 5 plus albums direct from each artist for free (via pay-what-you-want systems). There’s no way I would have anywhere near as much Blackbird Blackbird if it wasn’t mostly free (and legally so). Same with Pretty Lights - only there because a girl I knew listed pretty lights as a favourite artist on facebook, so I went and investigated and found their entire back catalogue is available for free.

Funnily enough, the pioneers of pay-what-you-want, Radiohead, come in at 7. But I think that’s more because of the 15+ years of albums, than the release of In Rainbows for free.

In celebration, here’s Kanye West - All of the Lights (Pretty Lights remix).

I live in Epsom, and in the last few years the racecourse has held interesting evenings in July in an effort to get more people coming to the races - pay £35 for an evening of races, and then once the racing stops the music starts. A few weeks ago the Beach Boys played their only UK date of 2011 in Epsom, tonight it was the turn of Blondie. Debbie Harry is 66. wow. But she was good, and the band was tight, so who cares I lost all my money betting on ‘Battle of Britain’ in the 18.40?

I love Dark Mean, and their two EPs Frankencottage and Music Box (both of which used to be freely available on their bandcamp). Soothing, folky, on occasion euphoric. I haven’t heard the new album, but I can’t wait to do so. Smoke Lake was called Frankencottage on that EP, but it’s been renamed for the album.

Sometimes, all I want to listen to is commercial alt power indie rock from Ireland but based in Glasgow.

Unfortunately, it’s a pretty narrow genre, not exactly teeming with options.

Fortunately, Snow Patrol are pretty damn good.
